Welcome to The Detour.
The Detour is a genuine labor of love on a mission to cut through the noise of the internet through nuanced, underreported news and feature storytelling from consequential corners of the world. Sent weekly on Wednesday afternoons, this newsletter is written by me (hi!👋) Kelly Kimball, an award-winning editor, reporter, and social media strategist based in Brooklyn, New York, by way of Santiago, Chile, Washington, DC, and the San Francisco Bay Area. As the Senior Editor at More to Her Story and an alum of Frame and Foreign Policy magazine, I’ve seen firsthand the immense need for astutely reported news that explains the consequential ripples of global events with empathy, context, and human scale.
My promise to you as a reader is to hone this mission with every edition of the newsletter you receive in your inbox.
The Detour is a work of independent journalism. But, what does that actually mean? It’s a newsletter free from any corporate, political, or government influence. It avoids group think that has historically marginalized women and journalists of color in traditional newsrooms. Importantly, it doesn’t use sensationalism as a crutch, opting instead for the slow work of astutely reported stories that benefit readers wishing to know more, dive deeper, and remain curious about the world around them.
In Partnership with Frame Media
I founded The Detour in January 2024 with Frame Media founder and CEO Ben Moe, creative director Aloma Antao, and product lead Jeremy Siwik as the flagship newsletter of the independent news startup Frame Media. Today, The Detour is a newsletter with a global audience of 25,000+ readers, and Frame Media has evolved into a creative software tool that allows any organization or publication to transform text into interactive, multimedia article experiences that encourage audiences to get lost, go on educational adventures, and really pay attention. You can get in touch with Ben to learn about using Frame.
